Homepage Redesign

IBM Sterling Supply Chain Business Network

Planning

The possibility of updating the homepage had been discussed previous to my inclusion on the team, leaving me with a starting idea of the direction the SCBN team would want to go with the redesign. From there I wrote out the features I knew I needed to include, such as:

  • Notification severity

  • A 'read' status

  • A larger more accessible advertisement area

  • A user story section.

From this list I was able to create thumbnails and potential wireframes to illustrate the potential layouts that could hit all of those points.

Design

After selecting a wireframe to be the base of the design, I got to work refining the various sections of the homepage to include the basic required features, and some additional features that made the experience of the page more enjoyable.

Additionally, rules for prioritization within the page had to be created. As we were switching from a single page design to a multi-tab design, each section needed a ranking of importance. While initially the notifications were seen as the priority, we found that upon consultation with users, the notifications did not change regularly enough for this. Instead, the advertising splash screen was prioritised, with a caveat to open directly to the notifications in the case of a high priority notification.
